Liverpool are one of the clubs said to be interested in signing RB Leipzig centre-back Castello Lukeba, according to a new transfer claim.

The Reds go marching on under Arne Slot, with Wednesday’s 1-0 win away to Leipzig in the Champions League seeing them set a new club record.

It is the first time in Liverpool’s history that they have won their opening six away matches to start a season, highlighting the stunning job their new head coach is doing.

The fact that the summer transfer window was quiet at Anfield makes it all the more impressive, with the Dutchman far from backed in the market.

It goes without saying that reinforcements are required in the upcoming windows, however, and it looks as though Lukeba could be a primary target for Liverpool.

According to RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins [via This Is Anfield], the Reds have joined Real Madrid and Manchester United in showing an interest in the 21-year-old, having come up against him at the Red Bull Arena on Wednesday:

“This winter Real Madrid is one of the contenders. Next summer, there will be more candidates. Manchester United and Liverpool have been interested in him for several months.”

Meanwhile, Sky Germany reporter Philipp Hinze has claimed that Lukeba will have a £75m release clause inserted into his new Leipzig deal signed until 2029, starting from next summer.

Our thoughts on Liverpool’s interest in Lukeba…

The centre of Liverpool’s defence may be flourishing currently, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate both in imperious form, but it remains an important area of focus for Michael Edwards, Richard Hughes and Slot.

An injury to either would suddenly leave the Reds looking weak there, with Jarell Quansah still a young player and Joe Gomez playing at full-back more often in recent seasons.

In Lukeba, Liverpool would be signing a fantastic long-term option with a huge future in the game, having already made a combined 119 appearances for Lyon and Leipzig. He has also won one cap for France, and that number will surely only rise significantly as the years pass.

A left-footed centre-back, Lukeba may be viewed as Van Dijk’s eventual successor in that position, and if he could come in and learn from the Dutchman, before taking his place, it could prove to be the most seamless transition possible.
