Mohamed Salah will be expecting to sign a two-year contract extension at Liverpol instead of a 12-month one, according to former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The 32-year-old’s future is a major talking point right now, with his current deal expiring at the end of this season and no extension sorted yet.

For now, things have reached a reported impasse, as is the case with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, which will be of concern to supporters.

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson claimed that Salah won’t be accepting a one-year deal to stay on at Anfield, wanting at least two years instead:

“He is that important. You look at how fit he is, you look at the games that he plays and you look at his numbers year on year, you look at his goals, his assists, you look at the amount of games he plays. At 32 now you look at what Ronaldo is still doing at his age, playing at maybe a different level but actually most of the way that he looks after himself, how fit he is and the contribution that he still gives you.

“I always say you weigh up what you would get from a player’s sale as opposed to what it would cost you to replace a player and also what it would cost you for not getting into the Champions League. He’s that important to Liverpool, he could be the difference between a title challenge or not getting in the Champions League next season.

“So the financial value that they would get from a sale with somebody towards the end of his contract would be nowhere near the value that it would be to sign him for another two years. He’s 32 so he’s not going to want a year extension, he’s going to want two years extension, then at 34, that move to the Saudi Pro League is still going to be there for him.”

Our thoughts on this latest Salah claim….

Robinson is spot on that Salah’s new contract needs to be at least a two-year extension, with his physical brilliance meaning he can stay at the highest level for a long time.

While some players peak by 32, the Liverpool legend looks close to as good as ever – he already has four goals and assists apiece in seven Premier League games this season – and the Reds could have three or four years of him if they can reach an agreement.

Salah needs to feel wanted, though, in order to stay put, and the club must do all they can to retain his services rather than see him leave in 2025.
