Liverpool have been dealt a fitness concern regarding two players ahead of their Champions League meeting with Bologna, with two players absent from training.
The Reds are back in European action on Wednesday evening, welcoming Bologna to Anfield for their first Champions League game since 2022/23.
Arne Slot’s side will be resounding favourites to prevail against their Serie A opponents, but they mustn’t take them lightly.
Liverpool won their first European outing with a 3-1 victory away to AC Milan, so three more points here would put them in a strong early position in the group stage.
It looks as though the Reds could be without a couple of important figures, however, with Sky Sports reporting that Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota didn’t train on Tuesday.
On the plus side, Darwin Nunez was back in the fold, having missed last weekend’s 2-1 win away to Wolves in the Premier League through illness.
Our thoughts on Liverpool’s potential injuries…
Having been hurt badly by injuries at times last season, Liverpool have been relatively fortunate so far this time around, although it looks as though that could be about to change.
It is worth stressing that Chiesa and Jota haven’t been ruled out of Wednesday’s match, but their absence from training does raise alarm bells.
Hopefully, if they are out it will only be for one game, before returning at Crystal Palace on Saturday lunchtime.
On the plus side, this could give Slot’s squad depth a chance to shine, however, with both Cody Gakpo and Nunez waiting in the wings.
The former is finding it hard to oust the in-form Luis Diaz, but it could be that the Colombian is given a breather in place of his teammate.
With Jota potentially out, Nunez could then lead the line, with Mohamed Salah keeping his place out on the right-hand side.
This is precisely why Liverpool have the options they do in attack, in terms of not being badly affected by injuries if a couple of key players are out, and the likes of Gakpo and Nunez should see this as a big potential opportunity to stake a claim.
