Virgil van Dijk will “definitely” sign a new deal at Liverpool, according to an exciting claim from former Premier League scout Mick Brown.

The Dutchman is out of contract at Anfield at the end of this season, like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, but an extension hasn’t been agreed yet.

Speaking to Football Insider, however, Brown said that he is in no doubt that Liverpool captain Van Dijk will sign on the dotted line soon:

“I firmly believe that this is a pressure job from the agents. They want to get the best deal possible for their players, whether that’s here or elsewhere.

“But I have no doubt that Van Dijk will definitely sign an extension to his contract. He’s still a crucial player under the new manager and he’s playing in a team that, at the moment, look like they could go and win things.

“In the summer, I heard he was keen to see whether the new coach could match his ambitions. They’re top of the league after ten games and have lost just once all season – I think he’ll be delighted with the way things have gone.

“He’s the captain, he loves the club, and the fans love him. What else could you want? “I can’t see a situation in which he leaves in the near future.”

Our thoughts on Brown’s comments about Van Dijk…

Liverpool fans will understandably be encouraged by this update, with the importance of tying Van Dijk down to a new deal impossible to downplay.

The 33-year-old arguably remains the best centre-back in world football, with his form this season playing a huge role in the Reds sitting top of the Premier League, as well as leading the way in the Champions League group.

While Van Dijk isn’t getting any youngster, he is showing no signs of slowing up, averaging 5.1 clearances and 3.7 aerial duel wins per game in the league.

There is no reason why the Netherlands superstar can’t remain at the highest level for several more years, and ensuring he signs a new contract is just as important as Alexander-Arnold and Salah, if not more so.
