Fabrizio Romano claims it is a “matter of time” until Ibrahima Konate signs a new contract at Liverpool, in a massive boost for the Reds amid ongoing concerns with other players.
The Frenchman joined Liverpool back in the summer of 2021, arriving from RB Leipzig with a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young centre-backs.
Since then, Konate has been a key player for the Reds, generally proving to be Virgil van Dijk’s first-choice defensive partner, even if he did lose his place to Jarell Quansah towards the end of last season.
In 2024/25, the France international has been a rock for Arne Slot’s side, playing a big role in them topping the Premier League table after 10 matches.
Writing on X on Monday, Romano said that Konate will sign a new deal with Liverpool in the near future, ahead of his current contract expiring in 2026:
“Ibou Konate returns to team training as he’s expected to be ready to face Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool also keep working on new deal for Ibou, considered matter of time.”
Our thoughts on Romano’s update on Konate…
This is wonderful news for Liverpool, at a time when supporters are sweating over Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah leaving next summer.
None have signed extensions yet and it remains to be seen how many of them, if any, will stay on.
Konate is such an important player when he is on top of his game – injuries have been an issue down the years – with Jurgen Klopp a big admirer during their time together at Liverpool, saying:
“He played pretty early games for us. I think we all agree he’s an exceptional talent, physically outstanding and a good footballer as well.”
At just 25, Konate still has so many years left in him, too, so it is paramount that Liverpool tie him down to a new deal as soon as possible – here’s hoping the magical trio of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Salah then follow suit.
They are all understandably more high-profile players, especially given the fact that their contracts expire in 2025, but Konate is an influential figure in his own right.
