Liverpool hero Diogo Jota is expected to be sidelined for at least another week after the international break, according to a new update from James Pearce.

The Portuguese picked up a rib injury away to Chelsea last month, having been landed on by Tosin Adarabioyo, and he hasn’t featured in the month or so since.

Jota hasn’t been missed too much, which has been a big relief for Arne Slot, but Liverpool could do with him back as soon as possible.

According to Pearce in his Mailbag for The Athletic, the 27-year-old is expected to be back for the Reds “about a week after the international break.”

This suggests that Liverpool will continue to be without Jota for the upcoming Premier League games away to Southampton and at home to Manchester City, as well as the Champions League clash with Real Madrid at Anfield sandwiched in between.

The attacker could then potentially be back for the league meeting with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on December 4th.

Our thoughts on Jota’s injury update…

This certainly isn’t a bad update regarding Jota, even though he would ideally be back straight after the internationals for the Southampton game.

Getting the Portugal international back on the pitch is so important in the Premier League title race, with Jurgen Klopp speaking highly of him during his time as manager, saying:

“Exceptional player, exceptional boy. He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs. He has the technical skills, he has the physical skills and he is very smart and can learn all the tactical stuff pretty quick.
“On top of that, he can play all three positions; in a 4-2-3-1 he could play as the 10. So, it is very helpful. He has the speed, has the desire to finish situations off really good. I think his goalscoring record is pretty impressive.”
Jota will have to work to get his place back upon his return, given the form of the likes of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo – Darwin Nunez is doing his bit for the cause, too – but if Liverpool are to win the title this season, they will need some key contributions from their No.20.
