Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing a highly-rated Championship player in the near future, but it’s not Sunderland star Chris Rigg.
The Reds have generally been quiet in the transfer market in recent windows, only signing Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa in the summer.
The former has remained on loan at Valencia for the 2024/25 season, while the latter arrived as something of a surprise addition from Juventus.
Many Liverpool supporters will hope to see the club busier in 2025, whether that be in January and next summer, and they have been linked with a move for an exiting young talent.
According to The Sunderland Echo, the Reds are eyeing a move for Sunderland teenager Trey Ogunsuyi, “despite missing out on the chance to sign the youngster as a scholar.”
The report does state that it “remains to be seen whether Liverpool’s interest will result in concrete bids during the upcoming January transfer window and beyond”, with the Black Cats doing a “good job at securing the futures of their best young talent in recent seasons.”
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Ogunsuyi…
Not a huge amount may be known about Ogunsuyi among Liverpool supporters, given his age, but it is exciting to see the Reds showing interest in a player who could have such a bright future in the game.
At just 17, the attacker has already scored 15 goals in 40 youth team appearances for Sunderland, while Black Cats Under-21s manager Graeme Murty has lauded him, saying:
“At the minute, he is still a young player who needs to discover more about our environment and the experience of being with professional players. He needs time to develop, for sure. But he has many qualities and he is a very interesting player for the future.”
While Liverpool need experienced players for the present – individuals who can make Arne Slot’s side more of a force immediately – signing young stars for the long-term future is also vitally important.
Ogunsuyi would fall into that bracket, as is the case with highly-rated Sunderland teammate Rigg, who has also been linked with a move to Anfield recently.
