Liverpool are reportedly ready to open talks with a “world-class” Reds player alongside Ibrahima Konate, in a big boost for Arne Slot.

On Monday, it was claimed by Fabrizio Romano that it is a “matter of time” until Konate extends his stay at Anfield, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2026.

There is so much contract talk doing the rounds at Liverpool currently, most notably surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, and now another significant rumour has emerged.

According to Football Insider, Arne Slot still sees Andy Robertson as his “first-choice left-back despite his irregular recent involvement”, adding that “the Reds plan to open contract talks with him next summer.”

The Merseysiders are keen to “prevent the situation they are tangled in” with Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah, tying down the Scot before he has 12 months remaining on his deal.

Our thoughts on Robertson signing a new Liverpool deal…

Robertson isn’t quite the force he used to be, which is only natural considering he is only 30 years of age and has many years of relentless running in his legs, but an extension would still be good news for Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard has waxed lyrical over him and Alexander-Arnold in the past, saying: “It’s not a question of ‘how good can he be?’ because he is already there. What we have in Trent and Robbo (Andy Robertson) now, straight away, you would put them in the world-class bracket. They are up there with the best players in their position, worldwide. So there’s no point saying how good could they be because they are already there.”

The Scotland captain is a hugely experienced figure who could steadily become more of a squad figure over time, with a younger alternative coming in as first-choice left-back.

Wolves ace Rayan Ait-Nouri has been linked with a move to Anfield, for example, and if Liverpool had the Algerian and Robertson as their options, it would be strong.

Kostas Tsimikas has found some improved form of late, but moving him on to accommodate Ai-Nouri or someone else makes sense next summer, retaining Robertson at the same time.
