Liverpool haven’t given up on completing the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, according to reliable journalist David Ornstein.
The Reds were strongly linked with a move for the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window, seeing him as the perfect option to come in and excel in the No.6 role.
Zubimendi decided to stay put at Sociedad, however, feeling that remaining there was best for his career, acting as a blow for Liverpool.
The Reds opted not to sign a replacement option, which in hindsight has paid off handsomely, with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister shining in a double pivot.
According to The Athletic‘s Ornstein, the “admiration continues” when it comes to Liverpool and Zubimendi, with Arsenal also potentially eyeing him up.
Our thoughts on Liverpool’s continued interest in Zubimendi…
While Liverpool’s midfield has shone this season, the chance to sign Zubimendi still shouldn’t be sniffed at, given his qualities in a deep-lying role.
The Reds still lack a player of his ilk, barring the ageing Wataru Endo, and Spain manager Luis de la Fuente‘s comments on him sum up his quality:
“Yes, we’ll try to find the right moment for each player. But you know, and I’ve publicly stated, that for me, Martin is the second-best player in the world. We are incredibly lucky to have these two—who I consider the best players in the world. But we also have other fantastic players who’ve been here and are with us now—another fantastic player.
“Pepelu hasn’t come yet, but he’s been called up with us. I’ve mentioned others as well, though I might miss naming someone, and then they’ll say I didn’t mention them. But we will continue with the team because it needs stability, continuity, and strength, and we feel strong in every way.”
Hopefully, Zubimendi realises that he made a mistake opting against joining Liverpool in the summer, with a January transfer happening instead.
That would only bolster Arne Slot’s side’s hopes of going all the way in the Premier League this season and he could be a brilliant signing for years to come. Ensuring Manchester City don’t sign him to fill the void left by the injured Rodri is also key.
