Liverpool have been quiet in the transfer market for some time now, but they are reportedly eyeing a key addition once the January transfer window arrives.

The Reds only signed Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa during the summer, which left plenty of supporters feeling underwhelmed at the lack of business.

The former is seen as a long-term replacement for Alisson, remaining on loan at Valencia for the 2024/25 season, while the latter hasn’t made much of an impact at all yet.

Moving forward, it is essential that Arne Slot is backed in the transfer market, in order to give the Dutchman the best possible chance of success, and it looks as though FSG could allow funds to be spent in January.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool want to sign a new centre-back in the next window, seeing it as a key area to add depth in.

The report states that “Liverpool chiefs see January as an opportune time to strengthen as they bid to keep their Premier League title challenge on track”, adding that their “transfer team are doing their due diligence on a potential centre-back signing in the new year.”

The Reds are “reviewing options despite acknowledging that the winter window is tough”, although no specific centre-back is mentioned.

Our thoughts on Liverpool signing a new central defender…

Failure to bring in a centre-back in the summer felt risky by Liverpool, and while Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have generally been available so far this season, one more figure is still arguably needed there.

Jarell Quansah roared onto the scene last term, even taking Konate’s place at the end of the campaign, but he has made some costly errors in 2024 that have highlighted his rawness.

Both Konate and Joe Gomez have not been without their injury problems over the years, which is a big reason why an extra defensive face is required once January arrives.

Liverpool could get lucky and keep all four centre-backs fit for the whole of the 2024/25 campaign, but recent years have shown that injuries can easily throw the Reds off course after having the chance to make signings.
