A key update has emerged regarding the future of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, with the Dutchman reportedly closing in on an extension.
The skipper’s future has been a massive talking point of late while hoping not to act as a distraction from the Reds’ brilliant performances on the pitch.
Van Dijk is out of contract at the end of this season, and although he appears to be happy at Liverpool, the fact that he hasn’t agreed a new deal acts as a real concern.
The 33-year-old has not only become one of the best centre-backs in the Reds’ history, but also should considered among the greatest players ever in his position.
According to Give Me Sport, Liverpool and Van Dijk are “hoping to conclude an agreement” when it comes to extending his stay at the club, with both parties seemingly in a similar position.
It is claimed that the Reds are “considering an extension that goes beyond the expected and sometimes traditional one-year addition for a player of his age”, which would surely make the Netherlands superstar feel even more appreciated.
Our thoughts on this latest Van Dijk update…
This is great news and a further sign that Van Dijk is more likely to stay at Liverpool than leave the club, which is massive for the Reds.
Keeping hold of their colossal defender is as important as retaining the services of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, and bringing in any new signing for that matter.
Van Dijk has received so many accolades down the years, summing up his brilliance, with former Liverpool striker Michael Owen waxing lyrical over him, saying:
“As I’ve said, Rio was the best centre-half I ever played with. But with Van Dijk, as a centre-forward I look at him and think: what do you do against him? He’s bigger than everyone, he’s faster than everyone, he’s stronger than everyone, he’s brilliant on the ball, he scores goals. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Hopefully, Van Dijk’s future will be sorted as soon as possible, allowing him to focus solely on the job at hand of leading Liverpool to a second Premier League title.
