Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola isn’t convinced Liverpool are the best club side in the world on current form, ahea of his side’s trip to Anfield this weekend.
The Reds face their biggest game of the season to date on Sunday afternoon, hosting a City side who could be in their poorest run of form in the history of Guardiola’s tenure.
On Tuesday night, the reigning Premier League champions blew a 3-0 lead at home to Feyenoord in the Champions League, coming off the back of five defeats in a row, in all competitions.
On the flip side, Liverpool are outstanding at the moment, seeing off Real Madrid in midweek and looking to go 11 points clear of City this weekend.
Speaking ahead of a huge match at Anfield [via This Is Anfield], Guardiola praised this Reds side, but didn’t go as far as to call them the best team on the planet on current form:
“I don’t know. One of the best for the results, they proved that. Arne is doing an incredible job. Years ago, when they said City was the best in the world, I didn’t pay attention for one second.”
Our thoughts on Guardiola’s assessment of Liverpool…
In fairness to Guardiola, his comments aren’t necessarily too dismissive of Liverpool, but it’s hard to argue against them being the cream of the crop in club football.
Arne Slot’s side are not only well clear at the top of the Premier League table, but they are also leading the way in the Champions League, winning all five matches in the competition this season.
While Guardiola will have his side ready for the trip to Anfield, he will surely be fearing the game, considering how contrasting both sides’ form is.
Liverpool couldn’t be more full of confidence and also look like they have lots of legs in midfield, whereas City are leggy and too easy to run through, with ageing figures dotted around their team.
Slot will be aware that the champions still pose a massive threat, however, not least with Erling Haaland leading the line, and the Reds will have to play well to pick up all three points.
