Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Mohamed Salah “will stay” at Anfield beyond this season, signing a contract extension in the process.

The future of the Reds’ most famous current player has been a major talking point in recent months, even threatening to become a distraction.

Thankfully, Arne Slot has ensured it hasn’t been an issue, guiding his Liverpool side to the top of the Premier League table, leaving supporters dreaming of title glory next May.

Speaking on Stick to Football [via Liverpool.com], Carragher claimed that he expects Salah to sign a new deal with the Reds, partly because there aren’t enough strong alternative options out there for him.

“I love Mo Salah, he’s one of the best players in the world, but the reason I say [he might not have loads of other options] is because of his age. When you’re on that type of money and you’re talking about getting a raise — a raise isn’t 10 or 20 grand a week,” Carragher said.

“How many attackers do Real Madrid have? Barcelona are in dire straits financially and PSG are nowhere near the team Liverpool are. There are only four or five teams that can realistically win the Champions League and Liverpool are one of them.

“He will stay as I’m not sure there are too many options. He’s not ready to go to Saudi [Arabia] — he can do that in three years’ time. Salah is that driven as a footballer to win the record of most goals – or whatever that may be for Liverpool.”

Our thoughts on Carragher’s comments on Salah…

Carragher does make a fair point, in terms of there not being any glaring alternatives for Salah to join next summer, especially with Liverpool thriving so much under Slot and looking like Europe’s best team currently.

While a contract agreement is still far from being reached between the Reds and the 32-year-old, it does feel increasingly as though he is more likely to stay at Anfield than leave, not least because an offer has now been sent to him by the club.

Salah still has years left in him at the top level, and assuming Liverpool give him what he wants, he will feel that there are many more records to be broken.
