Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has talked up the idea of the Reds signing Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez during the January transfer window.
Andy Robertson’s struggles of late have been well-documented, and the Scot does not look like the force he used to be under Jurgen Klopp.
His red card against Fulham last weekend was another sloppy moment and it feels increasingly important for Liverpool to bring in a new left-back soon.
Speaking on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football [via This Is Anfield], Carragher heaped praise on Kerkez and mentioned Liverpool, having been linked with a move to Anfield:
“The only reason why I mentioned Liverpool is the fact that, yes they’re probably looking for someone in that position, but the sporting director who brought him to Bournemouth, Richard Hughes, is now the sporting director at Liverpool.
“He’s aggressive, he’s got pace. Even when you look at him he looks like a full-back – really aggressive bombing up and down the left side.“He’s been superb since he’s come into the Premier League and he’s certainly one to watch in the future whether he stays or moves on because he’s made that much of an impact.”
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Kerkez in January…
Whether Liverpool choose to sign a new left-back in January remains to be seen, but Kerkez has to be looked at as a leading option, should that be next month or in the summer.
The 21-year-old is nine years Robertson’s junior, meaning he could come in and mature into the Reds’ first-choice left-back for many years, also acting as an upgrade on Kostas Tsimikas.
Kerkez is enjoying an impressive season for Bournemouth, not only averaging 2.4 clearances per match in the Premier League but also chipping in with one goal and two assists in the competition.
People mustn’t go too overboard about Robertson’s current form, however, with the veteran defender still producing good performances in recent months.
He does look as though he may have lost a yard of pace, though, and considering he is now in his 30s, it is only right that Liverpool focus on left-back as a key position.
