Reliable journalist David Ornstein has provided an important update regarding Liverpool trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.
The Reds have made a stunning start to life under Arne Slot, but while there is so much to celebrate on the pitch, several contract issues are acting as a distraction off it.
It is well-documented that Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah are all out of contract at Liverpool at the end of this season, at which point they will be able to leave Anfield on a free transfer.
It remains to be seen whether all three will sign extensions, or any at all for that matter, but a fresh update has emerged regarding the situation.
On Wednesday, The Athletic‘s Ornstein confirmed that Liverpool have “made a contract offer” to Van Dijk, suggesting that the Dutchman is currently looking the most likely to sign on the dotted line first.
In terms of Alexander-Arnold, the report states that “conversations are also ongoing” with him and his representatives” but “it remains unclear how the matter will conclude.”
Our thoughts on Trent’s Liverpool future…
Of the three players, it does naturally feel as though Alexander-Arnold is the most likely to find a new challenge next summer, with constant links surrounding a move to Real Madrid in 2025 not going away.
It is understandable why Liverpool’s vice-captain could be persuaded by a move to the La Liga giants, given their status as arguably the biggest club in world football, but they could be a team on the side under Carlo Ancelotti.
Liverpool’s comfortable 2-0 win over Madrid in the Champions League last week highlighted the gulf in quality between the two teams currently, and the hope is that the result acted as a word of warning to Alexander-Arnold.
Should Van Dijk be the first to take the plunge and extend his stay with the Reds, it will hopefully as a domino effect with the right-back and Salah.
All three players staying put would feel more significant than any new signings that arrive in the coming transfer windows, and Liverpool supporters will be waiting with bated breath to see what develops.
