Liverpool are reportedly no longer planning to make any new signings in the January transfer window, making a U-turn on their decision to bring in another midfielder.
The Reds are enjoying a season to remember so far, with Arne Slot taking to the head coach role like a duck to water and guiding his side to the top of the Premier League.
There was frustration from a chunk of the Liverpool fanbase back in the summer due to a lack of business, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa the only additions.
Mamardashvili has remained on loan at Valencia for the whole of the 2024/25 campaign, while Chiesa has suffered an injury and fitness-plagued time of things, not starting a single league game yet.
January offers Liverpool the chance to bring in fresh faces, but according to Football Insider, they are “likely to keep their powder dry” next month, with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes seemingly happy with the options at Slot’s disposal.
That means the Reds won’t sign a new midfielder, most notably Martin Zubimendi, with the Merseysiders going against their original plan to reignite their interest after missing out on him in the summer.
Our thoughts on Liverpool’s transfer plan in January…
This will no doubt cause an element of frustration with some Liverpool supporters, given the obsession with transfer business in the modern game, but there is arguably no need for additions in January.
That certainly applies in midfield, with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister enjoying superb seasons sitting deep, and Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis proving to be excellent options in the No.10 role.
With the likes of Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott good squad options, too, it wouldn’t make a huge amount of sense to snap up another midfielder.
If anything, a new centre-back is the most pressing position to focus on, considering Joe Gomez has now joined Ibrahima Konate on the sidelines.
Liverpool only have Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah fit in that area of the pitch, but the hope is that Konate is back sooner rather than later, while Gomez’s absence with a hamstring injury hopefully won’t be as long as some fear.
