Mohamed Salah would be open to the idea of signing a new one-year contract extension at Liverpool, according to reliable journalist Simon Hughes.

The 32-year-old was once again exceptional in the Reds’ 2-0 victory at home to Manchester  City on Sunday, scoring and assisting on a huge afternoon at Anfield.

Salah’s pass to Cody Gakpo for the opening goal was world-class, as Liverpool took their Premier League rivals apart, and he then buried a penalty in the second half.

There is constant concern surrounding the Egyptian’s future, however, with his contract expiring next summer and no sign of an agreement being reached over an extension yet.

Now, a significant update has emerged, with The Athletic‘s Hughes claiming that Salah “would accept a new one-year contract” at Liverpool, keeping him there until the end of the 2025/26 season.

He does add that Liverpool’s legendary No.11 “is growing increasingly exasperated at the club’s handling of negotiations”, however, suggesting that the club need to act fast.

Our thoughts on this latest Salah update…

Salah showed on Sunday why he simply must be given a new deal at Anfield, with few other wide players in world football capable of recording such incredible numbers on a consistent basis.

It’s now 11 goals and seven assists for him in the league this season, and he has played a massive role in the Reds’ topping the Premier League table by nine points.

This is an issue that needs to be sorted, although in truth, it would be preferable to see Salah sign a two or three-year extension, rather than having the same saga going on this time next year.

Manchester United-supporting YouTuber Mark Goldbridge couldn’t even hide his admiration for the Liverpool star during the game on Sunday, saying:

“I hate saying it but [Salah] he’s world-class. Why is he so underrated? Why doesn’t he win Ballon d’Ors? That cross is unbelievable.”

If Salah isn’t still with the Reds next season, something has gone badly wrong, with the winger now making a strong case for being the greatest Liverpool player of all time, alongside Sir Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard.
