Liverpool are “keeping tabs” on exciting Sunderland teenager Trey Ogunsuyi, according to an update from reliable journalist Lewis Steele.
The Reds were always impressive advocates of youth during Jurgen Klopp’s side time as manager, with the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott all growing from youngsters into top-quality footballers.
While Arne Slot has arguably been a little more reluctant to blood youth during his time in charge of Liverpool to date, it looks as though a talented individual is wanted by them.
According to Steele on X, the Reds are showing an interest in Sunderland “starlet” Ogunsuyi, with the 18-year-old a talented forward:
“Believe Liverpool are keeping tabs on Sunderland starlet Trey Ogunsuyi, 18. Belgian youth international banging in the goals for Sunderland U21s and has been on bench for first team.”
Meanwhile, The Daily Mail‘s report that Steele links to adds that Liverpool are “poised to raid” the Black Cats, with his ability to “play across the front line” noted.
Our thoughts on Liverpool signing Ogunsuyi…
Ogunsuyi may not be the household name that plenty of Liverpool fans will be craving in one of the upcoming transfer windows, but he is a player with a high ceiling who could be an inspired long-term addition.
Sunderland coach Graeme Murty is a big admirer of the teenage attacker, heaping praise on some of his attributes after seeing him in action earlier this year, saying:
“I thought he was very good and he’s only a young man playing against significantly older and more mature athletes. It’s really sometimes very difficult as a lone striker against three, but his hold up play has improved immeasurably, he’s using his body an awful lot better.
“The pleasing thing for the goal is not necessarily the fact he’s scored but his understanding and support, the way he’s brave enough to stay on the ball. He works his receiving skills that we’ve worked so hard on and he thoroughly deserved his goal, so we are really pleased for him to get his first goal and hopefully it will be the first of many.”
The lure of Liverpool is great for any player, so it is easy to see Ogunsuyi’s head being turned, and it will be interesting to see how the situation develops in the coming weeks and months.
