Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has dropped a promising injury update regarding Joe Gomez, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez, ahead of the weekend trip to Bournemouth.

The Reds face arguably their most important game of the season so far on Saturday afternoon, making the trip to a Cherries side who are flying in the Premier League currently.

The south coast club have enjoyed respective 4-1 and 5-0 wins away to Newcastle United and at home to Nottingham Forest in their last two outings, so victory for Liverpool would feel huge, given how tough a 90 minutes it could be.

Gomez, Jota and Nunez have all been injury doubts leading up to the match, and while none may feature this weekend, Slot confirmed on Friday that they are all back in training.

“All three of them are in training today,” Slot said.

“So then the question is are they already far enough to join us towards Bournemouth. That’s something we have to wait and see today.

“Because we probably have already have more than 20 players available – we always have more than 20 available, but the ones that are mostly there. So we have to make the smartest decision for them, but also for winning the game tomorrow.”

Best fortune with injuries in years

To be in the position where Slot is able to ease these three players back in is such a luxury, especially in comparison to the injury woes Liverpool have so often suffered in recent years,

Jurgen Klopp found his squad decimated at times, not least last season, when a much-changed team managed to get past Chelsea in the EFL Cup final.

Now, Liverpool almost have a clean bill of health, however, and it is helping so much when it comes to the stability and rhythm within the team.

For that reason, there is no need to rush Gomez, Jota and Nunez back against Bournemouth, even though having them on the substitutes’ bench would clearly be a bonus.

Instead, Slot may feel that the EFL Cup semi-final second leg clash with Tottenham at Anfield next Thursday makes more sense to bring them back into the fold.
