Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has confirmed that Curtis Jones suffered an injury blow in the 2-1 victory at home to Lille in the Champions League.

The Reds retained their 100% record in Europe’s biggest competition on Tuesday evening, edging out their opponents at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott got the goals for Liverpool, who are through to the Champions League knockout stages and still have a great chance of topping the group next week.

An injury to Jones was one of the few negatives on the night, however, with the 23-year-old removed at half-time after hurting himself before the interval.

Speaking after the game [via This Is Anfield], Slot discussed Jones’ injury, admitting he couldn’t play on any further after initially going down in the first half.

“The idea was to take Dom and Ryan off at half-time, but unfortunately Curtis couldn’t continue, so that’s why Dom stayed a bit longer,” Slot said.

“There was a moment in the game that he felt [something] and he said ‘let’s play for five more minutes and then see how it is’. But he said he had to go out at half-time.”

Our thoughts on Jones’ latest injury setback…

Jones has been injury-plagued during his Liverpool career to date, with absences arriving often when he is picking up some momentum.

Hopefully, his withdrawal on Tuesday was more precautionary than anything, but if history is anything to go by, the midfielder could end up being sidelined for a frustrating amount of time.

While Jones hasn’t necessarily been on top form of late, Liverpool still badly need him during a crucial period, with Micah Richards lauding him at the back-end of 2024 after an excellent debut for England, saying:

“Curtis Jones was extraordinary, that’s one of the best England debuts I’ve ever seen. And what I mean by that, when you go to England sometimes the pace is a little bit slower and you sort of play the easy pass.”

Time will tell how long Jones is out injured, but without him, it is vital that fringe players such as Wataru Endo and Elliott are available to step up.
