Rumoured Liverpool transfer target Jorrel Hato has revealed why he was at Anfield last weekend, assessing his chances of moving to the club in 2025.

The 18-year-old is arguably one of the most exciting young defenders in Europe currently, becoming a key player for Ajax at an extremely tender age.

Hato was even spotted at Anfield watching Liverpool’s 4-1 victory at home to Ipswich Town in the Premier League last weekend, leading to excitement growing about a potential move in the January transfer window.

It has since been revealed that the teenager was invited to the game by Ryan Gravenberch, and speaking to De Telegraaf [via Sport Witness], he discussed his presence on Merseyside last weekend and confirmed he is staying at Ajax for now:

“I read it all. But I also know that not everything was right. For my development it’s best that I stay at Ajax now. I was invited by Ryan Gravenberch,” Hato said.

“But I didn’t speak to a director there. Liverpool played well and the atmosphere in the stadium was good, but there is no more to say.”

Ideal summer signing for Liverpool?

Hato is such a talented young player with a huge future in the game, so Liverpool should be looking at him as a primary target in the summer transfer window.

The Dutchman is capable of shining at both left-back and centre-back, generally playing in the former this season but potentially becoming a force in the latter over time.

This is exactly the type of player Liverpool need, with Andy Robertson looking past his best this season and a long-term replacement needed for both the Scot and Virgil van Dijk.

Hato has already made 92 appearances for Ajax, despite being so young, also winning five caps for the Netherlands, while John van ‘t Schip has hailed him, saying:

“We don’t have to do a lot because he is an exemplary professional. Of course, he has fun with the boys and that’s something that needs to happen because that makes sure you train happily. But he is also a very serious guy in the sense that he trains well, he takes care of himself.”

Hato is sure to have plenty of suitors come the end of the season, but Liverpool are a huge draw under Arne Slot and he will hopefully see the Reds as his ideal next club.
