There is “genuine” interest from Saudi Arabia in Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, according to a fresh update from renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Uruguayan finds himself under the spotlight for some patchy form, as has often been the case during his two-and-a-half years at Anfield.

While a popular figure whose work ethic cannot be questioned, Nunez hasn’t developed much as a footballer since joining Liverpool, with some fans now running out of patience.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League, with the Reds reportedly turning down a £70m offer for him, and now Romano has provided an update on his YouTube channel [via Rousing The Kop].

“What I can confirm at the moment is only that interest from Saudi in Darwin Nunez is genuine.“There have been conversations to understand the situation of Darwin, the price tag and all these sorts of things. For sure there is something in terms of contacts but at the moment there is nothing advanced in terms of negotiations.

“We have to respect Liverpool – Darwin is an important player for them and they spent important money on him. There are still plenty of things to do and at the moment, we are not at that stage.”

Our thoughts on Nunez’s Liverpool future…

With each passing week, the more it feels like Nunez’s Liverpool career could reach its conclusion at some point this year, whether it be in the January transfer window or in the summer.

The Reds ace is down the attacking pecking order under Arne Slot, so if a bigger offer arrives for him, the club may well be willing to accept it.

In some ways, it would be sad to see Nunez move on, given his popularity and the fact that Jurgen Klopp lauded him last year, saying:

“He loves to play for this team together with these boys and has quality coming out of his ears, to be honest. Is he at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us. But can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes.”

As mentioned, Nunez hasn’t kicked on enough as the years have passed, and at 25, he is now at an age where he should be a polished footballer.

Slot doesn’t appear to see him as a vital player, so it would be no surprise to see him at a different club come the end of the summer, if not this month.
