Liverpool are “determined” to sort a new deal for Harvey Elliott, according to former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown.

So many headlines are being written about the futures of Trent Alexander-Anrold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah that it’s easy to forget about the situation of other players.

Elliott has had a frustrating season due to injury and a lack of playing time, but he has enjoyed some good performances of late.

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown claimed that Liverpool want to seal an extension for the 21-year-old, despite rumours linking him with a move away:

“I hear they’re determined to agree a new deal. Harvey Elliott has done better than I thought he would do, to tell you the truth. But he seems to be a good character around the club and he’s made real improvements to his game while he’s been at Liverpool.

“The only reason he’s not in the side is because they’ve got players like Mac Allister and Szoboszlai there. He’s been injured as well, don’t forget, so he’ll be given time to come back. So yes, Liverpool want to keep him at the club.”

Our thoughts on Elliott getting a new deal at Liverpool…

It’s hard to criticise anything Arne Slot has done this season, considering how brilliant he has been as Liverpool’s new head coach, but his use of Elliott has been a little curious at times.

The Englishman was such an effective substitute for the Reds last season, but his boss has almost felt reluctant to play him at times, certainly from the outside looking in.

It is encouraging that Brown believes Liverpool want to tie Elliott down to a new deal, though, because at 21, there is still so much more to come.

He offers something different to more powerful players such as Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones, bringing craft in tight areas, as he showed at Brentford earlier in the month, playing a part in both of Darwin Nunez’s late goals. Slot hailed his “big impact” in that match, in fairness.

Elliott will have to accept a squad role moving forward, but he appears to be happy at his boyhood club and will hopefully enjoy many more years at Anfield.
