Liverpool have been handed a major boost with the news that Joe Gomez has returned to training ahead of the Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven in midweek.

The Champions League group stage reaches its conclusion on Wednesday evening, with all 36 teams playing at the same time.

Liverpool know they can’t finish lower than second in the table, but victory away to PSV would confirm top spot, ensuring they end the phase with a remarkable 100% record.

The Reds have been relatively fortunate in the injury department of late, but Gomez has been missing since limping out of the 5-0 win away to West Ham in the Premier League on December 29th.

Now, journalist David Lynch has taken to X to say that the 27-year-old is now back in training, in a significant update for Slot:

“Joe Gomez back in training ahead of Liverpool’s trip to PSV Eindhoven.”
Our thoughts on returning to training for Liverpool…
This is fantastic news for Liverpool, with Gomez playing so well before his hamstring injury setback, filling in when Ibrahima Konate was suffering from an absence of his own.
Meanwhile, Slot has spoken so highly about the English centre-back, clearly appreciating what a valuable squad member he is, saying:

“Joe is patient in a good way, he always makes sure he is ready whenever the club or his teammates need him, and that is special when it comes to his mentality because not many players can do this for so many years that he has done this.”

It would be a surprise if Gomez was involved against PSV, but having him close to being back in the fold is great news, as Liverpool continue to battle across four competitions this season.

There are upcoming domestic cup games against Tottenham and Plymouth Argyle in the next few weeks, which could act as an opportunity to ease him back in rather than expecting him to shine in some big Premier League matches.
With Konate seemingly never too far away from a potential injury and Jarell Quansah still a young player, the importance of Gomez being back cannot be downplayed.
