Liverpool are very closely tracking the progress of Bundesliga talent Xavi Simons despite a quiet January transfer window.

The winter transfer window is set to close without a hint of a Liverpool transfer but after Arne Slot opted against making many signings at the start of the season, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise.

The Reds are flying in all competitions and hold a very real chance of winning silverware this season. Many would not have predicted this when Jurgen Klopp announced he was leaving the club but Slot has worked wonders in his stead.

While depth at centre-back would have been a useful upgrade this month, Liverpool should have enough about them to complete the season successfully.

And so the Merseysiders are already turning their attention to potential signings for the 2025/26 season.

Bryan Mbeumo has been shortlisted in case Mohamed Salah leaves but another exciting new link is Xavi Simons.

Liverpool and Manchester Clubs tracking Xavi Simons after official RB Leipzig switch

The Bundesliga confirmed today that RB Leipzig have completed a permanent move to sign Xavi Simons from PSG with the 21-year-old under contract until July 2027.

Upon the move becoming official, Simons told the Bundesliga website: “I’ve always said that I feel extremely at home in Leipzig and that I’m honoured by the appreciation shown towards me by the club.”

Now, it seems Liverpool are still tracking the attacking midfielder.

According to Christian Filk, Head of Football at Bild, Leipzig are open to selling Xavi in the summer transfer window despite finally signing him on a permanent basis.

The Bundesliga outfit is willing to negotiate in the €70 million (£58.5m) to €80 million (£66.9m) range.

Liverpool will have to beat Manchester United and Manchester City to his signature with all three Premier League giants currently tracking the 21-year-old ahead of a potential move to England.

Xavi Simons is a wonderful talent and would suit Slot’s philosophy perfectly

While Simons hasn’t quite managed the same devastatingly regular number of goals and assists as last season, there is no denying his talent.

This season he has scored five goals and provided four assists whereas he scored 10 goals last term with 15 assists on top.

However, he would be perfect for Arne Slot’s football philosophy. A big emphasis has been placed on breaking the lines to coax defensive sides out of their low blocks this season and Xavi is simply excellent at this.

Data from Fbref shows Simons makes an average of 2.41 passes into the box per 90 and makes 6.72 progressive passes per 90. This is a fancy way of saying the 21-year-old is exceptional at bypassing defenders with his passing.

This is important for Liverpool because their opposition is often very compact and unwilling to break shape for fear of punishment by the Reds’ attacking quality.

Should this transfer materialise, it would certainly be an exciting and beneficial one for Liverpool.
