Liverpool have added Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo to their shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window, in preparation for the possibility of Mohamed Salah leaving.

The biggest conversation at Liverpool right now is around the contract renewals for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Many, including Martin Keown, believe FSG and Liverpool will eventually find a way to appease Salah and keep him at the club beyond his contract’s end-of-season expiry.

But claims from Egypt suggesting Salah rejected the most recent offer from the club are not encouraging and serve as a concerning reminder that Salah could realistically leave the club at the end of the season.

It would be a disaster for Liverpool but it could actually happen.

Now, it seems as though Liverpool are looking around at potential targets should the worst-case scenario come to fruition.

Liverpool shortlist Bryan Mbeumo as Mohamed Salah replacement

According to a report from TeamTalk, Liverpool are now keeping an eye on Brentford’s deadly winger Bryan Mbeumo as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah should the owners fail in their contract negotiations with the 32-year-old and his agent.

Mbeumo has 14 goals in the Premier League this season which is very good considering only Alexander Isak (17), Erling Haaland (18) and Salah (19) have more.

Newcastle United and Tottenham are also interested in Mbeumo but a deal will only be possible in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Mbeumo is looking for an elite Premier League side playing in the Champions League that can offer him a big wage increase.

The Cameroonian striker is out of contract with Brentford in 2026 so this summer will likely be when he leaves the Bees.

Mbeumo would be good for Liverpool but losing Salah would make it difficult to appreciate

Liverpool parting ways with Mohamed Salah will be as painful as it was when Jurgen Klopp left in the summer.

But it’s difficult to imagine Liverpool finding a winger like the Egyptian even if it felt the same way when Arne Slot was announced as Klopp’s successor.

If Mbeumo replaces Salah, I fear supporters will battle to appreciate his talent in the absence of one of the greatest players to ever grace the Anfield pitch.

Salah is no longer just a player for Liverpool; he’s a living part of the club’s history and I fear there is no replacing what he offers to this football club.
