Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch has stressed the importance of his side starting quicker against Brentford than they have in other games this season, having been an achilles heel for the Reds.

Arne Slot’s side head to west London on Saturday, in what promises to be another major test after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw away to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Liverpool clearly aren’t in their best form of the season, only winning three of their last seven league matches, with slow starts proving to be an issue too often.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Gravenberch urged the Reds to iron out this shortcoming at Brentford this weekend, in order to improve their chances of victory.

“It will be a difficult game, of course,” Gravenberch said.

“We know also from last season, it was not easy, and we have to give our all. We have to start better than the game at Forest and then I think we have a good chance to win the game.

“It’s just the intensity what we give [and] I think also when we look at it back, it’s just the intensity in pressing and making the deep runs etc. It’s just that and we have to give that always from the start and then it will change, for sure.”

Our thoughts on Gravenberch’s comments…

This should be music to the ears of Liverpool supporters, with many growing frustrated at how Liverpool start games, before improving as the minutes tick by.

They fell behind to an early Chris Wood good at Forest, for example, and have generally taken too long to go out of the traps this season. That has to change if they are to remain in such a healthy position in the title race.

On the flip side, Brentford have been renowned for starting games in a fast manner, scoring after just 23 and 22 seconds against Tottenham and Manchester City in back-to-back games earlier in the season.

This feels like an enormous fixture for Liverpool, especially as they have a chance to go seven points clear of Arsenal before they host Aston Villa on Saturday evening.

Further dropped points for the Reds would give the Gunners a major incentive heading into their game, though, highlighting the importance of Saturday’s action.
