James McConnell was so impressive for Liverpool during his full Champions League debut that Arne Slot told reporters he will not go on loan.

After a thrilling but disappointing 3-2 defeat to PSV Eindhoven, Liverpool were confirmed as table toppers in the 2025 Champions League group stage.

Arne Slot rested almost all of his key players and gave opportunities to the club’s brightest talents and it’s safe to say James McConnell took his with aplomb.

His midfield performance has led to Slot declaring that the 20-year-old will not head out on loan but will instead stay with the Liverpool first team as they gear up for the business end of the season.

Speaking after full-time, Slot said: “But there’s definitely one that will not go out on loan: James McConnell. I liked him a lot today.”

Speaking to LFCTV, McConnell discussed what he called a “really proud night” and thanked Slot for the trust he put in him.

“It was obviously a good experience,” McConnell said.

“It was very disappointing, the result, we thought we could have got something from the game, especially at half-time we should have been comfortably winning the game.

“But in the end we got punished and we went a man down in the last 10 minutes, so it was tough. But the lads put in a big shift.

“If you ask the lads, we shouldn’t have conceded all three goals really and we gave ourselves a bit of a mountain to climb in the second half when they made a lot of changes, and we had a lot of young lads on the bench. It was always going to be tough.

“The lads have done brilliantly to win the last seven games and I think we topped the group in the end. It’s a great experience to learn from.

“It was a really proud moment to start the game and I was really excited. The boss has put faith in a lot of young lads, thanks to the work the senior lads have done over the course of the season.

“I’m really grateful to the boss and you’ve just got to take the opportunity when it comes to you.”

McConnell now has a priceless opportunity to truly break into the Liverpool squad.

It must be noted that the 20-year-old is not expected to receive that many minutes given the pressure on every game at this stage of the season but if he can continue to impress Slot, he may ensure that he is a part of the squad plans for 2025/26.
