Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was spotted having a conversation with Barcelona forward Ferran Torres and accidentally leaked why he didn’t join Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
On Sunday, Barcelona routed Valencia at the Camp Nou, running out 7-1 winners at full-time. For the Catalonians, it was a chance to draw closer to Real Madrid in the La Liga table.
For Valencia and Giorgi Mamardashvili, it was an awful evening and try as they might, it’s not one they will be able to forget any time soon.
The Georgian goalkeeper is set to join Liverpool in the summer which is likely to coincide with Caiomhin Kelleher leaving the club and after being tipped to join Newcastle United, Mamardashvili will likely take his place as no.2 to Alisson Becker.
Comments he reportedly made to Ferran Torres suggest he is fully aware of the pecking order at Anfield.
Giorgi Mamardashvili reveals why he didn’t make the move to Liverpool in the summer transfer window
In August 2024, Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Mamardashvili in the summer window of 2025 in a deal worth up to £29 million.
And the 6ft6in shot-stopper has now made it clear that Alisson is the reason he has yet to make the switch to Anfield.
After losing 7-1 to Barcelona on Sunday, Mamardashvili was filmed chatting with Ferran Torres and DAZN have reported on what was said between the pair.
According to the broadcaster, Torres asked: “Why didn’t you leave this year?”
Mamardashvili simply replied: “Alisson.”
Liverpool are blessed to have Alisson Becker at Anfield
Since his move to Anfield in 2018, Liverpool have been an entirely different outfit. Just like Virgil van Dijk, his impact on the Reds’ defensive fortunes has been extraordinary.
From Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius to Alisson and Kelleher, Liverpool have been blessed by safe hands and cool nerves.
The Brazilian enables Liverpool to play their swashbuckling style of play without worrying about what happens if the ball is at the wrong end of the pitch.
With his contract set to expire in June 2027, Liverpool supporters can rest easy knowing that Alisson’s immediate future at the club is not under threat.
Mamardashvili will likely have to wait for his big break at Anfield just like Kelleher which may mean at least two years on the bench before he becomes the no.1 on Merseyside.
