Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has told Real Madrid to sign Liverpool legend Virgil van Dijk this summer, in what could be a double deal alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Van Dijk and his teammate are both out of contract at the end of the season, as is Mohamed Salah, and none have signed extensions at Anfield yet.

The situation is causing understandable concern among the Liverpool fanbase, with Alexander-Arnold arguably feeling the most likely to move on.

Writing for The Times, Cascarino also backed Madrid to complete the signing of Van Dijk, saying it is “a no-brainer” for the reigning European champions:

“It would make perfect sense for Real Madrid to sign Virgil van Dijk as well as Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool when their contracts expire this summer.

“Real need a high-class centre-back and Van Dijk is one of the top five in the world. Carlo Ancelotti likes to work with experienced players and at 33, Van Dijk can play at the highest level for maybe another four years.

“In recent times, Real’s transfer policy has shifted to successfully target free agents, including Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Kylian Mbappe. It seems like a no-brainer.”

Our thoughts on Van Dijk joining Real Madrid…

Seeing Van Dijk depart Liverpool this summer doesn’t even bear thinking about, with the 33-year-old still his side’s most important player, for all the brilliance of others in the team.

Thankfully, the Dutchman has made it fairly clear that he is happy at Anfield, and while a new deal hasn’t been agreed yet, it would be a shock to see him move on.

It is impossible to downplay just how influential Van Dijk is to Liverpool, with Gary Neville calling him “world-class” in the past, saying: “Liverpool have got three world-class players in Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Salah. Van Dijk has been back to his best in this past month or two.”

It is imperative that the towering Dutchman is given the contract that he both craves and deserves, staying put at Liverpool for another few years. If not, a club like Madrid would no doubt love to have him.
