Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa has “no intention” of leaving the club during the January transfer window, according to an update from reliable journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Reds won 2-0 away to Brentford in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon, in what felt like a significant day in the Premier League title race.
Darwin Nunez came off the substitutes’ bench to score twice in stoppage time at the Gtech Community Stadium, sending Liverpool seven points clear of Arsenal.
Meanwhile, the Gunners’ 2-2 draw at home to Aston Villa later in the day was an added bonus for Arne Slot and his players.
Chiesa came off the bench at Brentford, celebrating wildly with Nunez when he opened the scoring, but there have been question marks surrounding his Liverpool future this month.
Taking to X on Sunday, however, Plettenberg poured cold water on the potential for the 27-year-old to leave in the January window:
“At this stage Federico Chiesa still has no intention of leaving Liverpool until the Deadline Day on February 3. He would like to stay at LFC and prove himself. The 27-year-old winger is fully focused on his goals with LFC. Contract until 2028.”
Our thoughts on Chiesa’s Liverpool future…
It would be a major surprise to see Chiesa depart this month, considering he only arrived at Liverpool from Juventus last summer.
Admittedly, the Italian’s lack of availability has been problematic – he is still awaiting his first Premier League start – but he is going to be needed between now and the end of the season.
Mohamed Salah is arguably showing a few signs of fatigue, having not scored or assisted in open play in his last four appearances, and giving him a rest and starting Chiesa on the right flank in certain matches is required.
It would make no sense for Liverpool to weaken their squad depth midway through the season unless they had a replacement for the winger lined up, and the hope is that he enjoys a more productive second half of the campaign.
There have been a few signs of Chiesa making more of an impact in recent weeks, albeit not too much, and the Reds have to keep him until at least the summer, before then making a decision about his future.
