Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic is on loan with RB Salzburg but could potentially head to Spain on loan if reports are accurate.
When Bajcetic burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old, Liverpool fans reacted with glee. It seemed at the time that they had a bonafide prodigy on their hands.
While that hasn’t necessarily changed, injury has stalled his progress when it seemed as though he would not have to wait long to become the first-choice defensive midfielder for Liverpool.
Now 20, Bajcetic is on loan at RB Salzburg but there is talk of a loan move to Las Palmas in La Liga.
Report suggest Las Palmas want Bajcetic despite Liverpool stance
A report from Spanish news outlet Marca claims that Las Palmas are in talks with Liverpool over signing Bajcetic on loan this month.
It would be quite understandable if Liverpool cut short his loan spell in Austria with Salzburg. So far this season, the midfielder has played 890 minutes of football which is decent but he hasn’t made an appearance since mid-December.
Furthermore, Bajcetic has deleted any shred of evidence he plays for Salzburg from his various social media accounts potentially hinting that his time with the Austrian side could be at an end soon.
What is the best course of action for Liverpool and Bajcetic?
Unless there has been a serious breakdown of communication between Bajcetic and Pep Lijnders, former Liverpool assistant manager and current head coach of RB Salzburg, it would be most prudent to keep the young midfielder where he is.
It’s imperative that he gets game time in order to continue developing but another loan spell may not necessarily be the right move. It’s not as if the 20-year-old has been wasting away on the bench all season.
Having had his fair share of injury battles over the last two years, it’s just as important that there isn’t too much change for a player that has shown glimpses of top talent. He could be a very special player in the future but for now, he simply needs to break back into the starting XI and perform.
Liverpool were in the market for a new defensive midfielder in the summer but Ryan Gravenberch has performed so well this season that may no longer be a priority for the Reds.
And if Bajcetic can return to top form and get the minutes he needs, Arne Slot may well want to keep him at the AXA Training Centre for the 2025/26 season.
