Liverpool are reportedly planning to open talks with Harvey Elliott over a new deal at the club, according to a key new contract update.
While much focus has been on the brilliance of this Reds side this season, as they top both the Premier League and Champions League tables, the futures of various players are also making plenty of headlines.
It is now common knowledge that Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are all out of contract at the end of the campaign, while Ibrahima Konate has also claimed that he has been offered an extension.
Now, according to Football Insider, Liverpool are “planning renewal talks” with Elliott over a fresh deal at Liverpool, amid rumours that the Reds aren’t considering offers for him in January or this summer.
The report states that the Merseysiders are “set to head off potential interest in the midfielder by sitting down with him to negotiate a contract extension.”
Our thoughts on Liverpool being offered a contract extension…
A new Liverpool deal for Elliott makes complete sense, with the 21-year-old still such a young player – one who has proven to be a brilliant squad option so many times in recent years.
On Tuesday night against Lille, the midfielder came off the substitutes’ bench to score his first-ever home Champions League goal, and he also produced a positive cameo away to Brentford last weekend, assisting Darwin Nunez’s second strike of the day.
After the Lille game, Salah heaped praise on his teammate, saying: “He was injured at the beginning of the season and when he came back it was tough with the guys in midfield, but I’m happy for him and to always help him. He’s a great lad and always tries to give his best, even if it’s five minutes or 45 minutes today, I’m happy for him.”
It isn’t going to be easy for Arne Slot to find a regular place in his starting lineup for Elliott, given his wealth of midfield and attacking options, but there is still so much more to come from him.
For that reason, Liverpool must retain his services moving forward, as he continues to mature as the years pass, so this update is great news.
