Liverpool and other interested clubs stand no chance of signing Rayan Cherki today after Lyon’s club president denied claims he could leave to join Borussia Dortmund.

While it may come as no surprise that Liverpool haven’t made any signings during the winter transfer window, one player that is certainly not leaving before the end of Deadline Day is Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.

A report from Caught Offside last week claimed that the Reds are one of several teams keeping a close watch on the 21-year-old but a deal valued at £18.4m will not happen until the summer window.

Cherki has been in phenomenal form this season. In 26 appearances, the left-footed technician has five goals and nine assists for Lyon. It’s thrilling to imagine what he could achieve in a more clinical side.

Lyon are seventh in Ligue 1 and Cherki may look to leave in the summer but it will not happen today.

Lyon president clarifies stance on Rayan Cherki

Amid rumours that Cherki could leave Lyon today to join Borussia Dortmund, the club’s president John Textor has put these suggestions to bed with comments the 59-year-old made to Canal Plus.

Relayed by Fabrizio Romano on X, Textor said: ‘Rayan Cherki to Borussia Dortmund? No chance. He’s NOT leaving.’

Liverpool are not likely to make any signings before the window shuts but if Cherki is available at that price point at the end of the season, it would be unsurprising to see the Reds get involved.

Cherki is not just efficient in terms of his attacking numbers, but an actual nightmare for defenders to face. He is extremely unpredictable and so good from a technical standpoint.

What are Cherki’s best attributes and how does he suit Liverpool?

Arne Slot would need to adjust his tactics to fit Cherki in based on the current Liverpool setup but he is so good it could be worth it. The 21-year-old is best when he has the freedom to drift into spaces in midfield and work his magic a bit like how Cole Palmer does for Chelsea.

Fbref data shows that he ranks in the 99th percentile for progressive passes, key passes, through balls, shot-creating actions and take-ons that lead to a shot.

Mind you, that’s just the stats that he ranks in the 99th percentile for.

He is a truly exceptional creative talent and whichever big clubs signs him will automatically begin creating more goalscoring opportunities than before.

If he is truly available for a miserly £18.4m fee, Liverpool could do a lot worse than snap him up.
