Liverpool are “likely” to battle Arsenal for the signing of Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi in the summer transfer window, according to a new update.

Arne Slot is blessed with great options at centre-back, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate arguably Europe’s strongest pairing currently.

Joe Gomez has also enjoyed a good season, barring an injury absence, and Jarell Quansah is a young defender with plenty of potential.

Come the summer, however, a fresh face needs to come in at centre-back – preferably a left-sided central defender who can also do a job at left-back.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are “likely to join the race” to sign Guehi in the next window, with Arsenal also set to be in for him.

Tottenham failed in their efforts to sign the England international for £70m in recent days, but Palace will find it hard to keep hold of one of their most important players come the end of the season.

Is Guehi worth the big money?

Guehi is an impressive defender who has grown into an influential figure for both club and country, standing out as arguably England’s best player at Euro 2024.

Naturally left-sided at centre-back, there is plenty of sense in Liverpool making a move for the 24-year-old, who was praised by Micah Richards last summer, with the pundit saying of him:

“He was very calm and composed. It must be daunting to enter your first major tournament at times, but he did not show it at all.”

That said, the price tag is the one thing working against Guehi when it comes to Liverpool signing him this summer, with the Palace ace arguably overpriced, as can be the case with homegrown talent.

The likes of Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes may feel that there are better, cheaper options out there – possibly someone who is happier to be a squad player to begin with, too.

Guehi would be expecting to start, given his status as a regular for England, but Van Dijk and Konate are superior players, so he would have to bide his time.

If Liverpool did sign him this summer, there is every chance that he would be a great addition, but it is easy to see the club looking elsewhere.
