Liverpool were contacted by an intermediary from the Saudi Pro League regarding a transfer for Darwin Nunez but the Reds did not hold any negotiations.

Nunez has had a tough time at Anfield and this season, in particular, has been hard for the Uruguayan. It’s so obvious that he is an extremely talented player but the end product has just not been there this season.

Yet, his late cameo against Brentford is an example of how important a player like him is.

Until he came on for his 25 minute cameo, Nunez had scored just four goals all season. A quickfire double, however, not only breathed life into his personal campaign, it was massive for Liverpool’s title credentials.

Had that game ended as a 0-0 draw, Liverpool would be four points ahead of Arsenal and not six.

Whether or not he will progress into the world-class striker many fans still hope he can be, Liverpool are determined that he is important to Arne Slot’s plans for this season at least.

Nunez not for sale, say Liverpool

Despite an approach from an intermediary from the Saudi Pro League, Liverpool declined to enter into negotiations to sell Nunez during the January Transfer window, according to James Pearce of the Athletic.

Liverpool’s stance that he is not for sale should give the 25-year-old hope that he can turn his career at Anfield around and secure his long-term future with the Reds.

It’s by no means make or break for the former Benfica star but he does need to find more consistency to succeed on Merseyside. Arne Slot might be the perfect player to harness his chaos for good.

Liverpool aren’t as intense as they were in attack under Jurgen Klopp but Nunez has all the tools to make a success of himself under Slot if he can continue following Slot’s direction.

Before his brace against Brentford, Slot went to bat for Nunez and placed his faith in the striker finding more goals to contribute to Liverpool’s title aspirations.

“For me, he has impact,” said Slot before Nunez won the game against Brentford.

“If you only look at goals, he hasn’t scored the amount of goals that he wants to score, or we want a number nine to score, but he does have impact in his work-rate. He’s part of a team that scores a lot of goals and is winning a lot.

“Of course, as a number nine you want to score more goals and that’s definitely what he wants as well. But I’m not only judging Mohamed Salah on his goals and Darwin on his goals – I also judge them on their work-rate and what they bring to the team.

“The fans support him so much that maybe he wants it too much.”
