Milos Kerkez has been linked with becoming the next Liverpool left-back but has come in for stick for the way he defended Mohamed Salah’s second goal against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 21-year-old has been in wonderful form for the Cherries this season and his energy and quality on the left flank have been important factors in their improved Premier League performance this season.

Bournemouth finished last season in 14th and now find themselves in a relatively lofty seventh place. With 14 games to play, they are already 8 points behind their tally for last season.

Kerkez, who has two goals and three assists, has been in fine form but he could not outmatch Mohamed Salah, who scored a penalty in the first half before facing the fullback up and curling the ball around him into the back of the net.

While any defender who is up against Salah has my sympathy, Kerkez will be the first to admit that he could have done better.

Well, maybe not the first, because Steve McManaman beat him to the punch.

Macca aims criticism at Liverpool target Milos Kerkez for Salah strike

Salah scored his 20th and 21st Premier League goals of the season to seal the victory for Liverpool. It was an important win against a tough opponent as Arsenal beat Manchester City 5-1 the following day to keep the pressure up in the title race.

But Kerkez will be disappointed with his performance although it might just be a blip on an otherwise exceptional campaign so far.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, Steve McManaman slammed Kerkez for the naive way he defended Salah’s goal.

McManaman said: “The finish is absolutely sublime, but you can criticise the left-back [Kerkez], he should have got tighter, has to go towards Salah to bring him on his left-foot, but he stands with his hands behind his back and allows Salah the space to bend it in.

“You shouldn’t be allowed to do that, as in the defender should be tighter and blocking that, but Kerkez does nothing apart from put his hands behind his back and watching the ball fly into the net.”

Liverpool closely monitoring Kerkez ahead of potential summer transfer to Anfield

In January, Fabrizio Romano reported that Liverpool and Manchester United are both “closely monitoring” the progress Kerkez is making on the South Coast.

This comes at a time when Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are both struggling to deliver quality performances on a consistent basis.

At 21, Kerkez is a perfect match for the Liverpool transfer profile and while there are some rough edges, the Hungarian seems set to become a wonderful player.

Given the Hungary connection with Dominik Szoboszlai, it would help him adjust to life on Merseyside but until Liverpool formalise their interest with an approach, it’s a waiting game.
