Liverpool have the finances to complete a triple contract extension for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, according to former Everton CEO Keith Wyness.
While Reds supporters will be thinking about shiny new signings in the summer transfer window, tying down arguably their three most important players is even more important.
Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah are all out of contract at Liverpool at the end of this season, but none have signed new deals yet, which is concerning.
Speaking to Football Insider, Wyness dropped a promising update regarding the futures of the Reds trio, saying there is no financial issue when it comes to handing them extensions.
“Liverpool are spending 63% of their turnover of wages,” Wyness said.
“There’s still room within the budget. Any renewals they’ve got in the pipeline – there’s still room to do that. I don’t think there will be any impact on those three players.
“There’s also plenty of room under the PSR rules, so I don’t think there’s anything holding them back – should they agree deals with Salah and Van Dijk.”
How many Liverpool legends will stay?
At this point, it is still a guessing game regarding Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah, considering none have committed their future to the club.
The general feeling does seem to be that the former is the most likely to depart, having potentially had his head turned by a move to Real Madrid in the summer, amid reported interest from them.
In fairness to Alexander-Arnold, he has done nothing to suggest that he wants to leave, but at 26, this is a massive decision in his career, and he may feel that now is the right time for another huge challenge.
With Van Dijk and Salah, they have made it clear that they are happy at Liverpool, so it would be a bigger surprise if they departed.
Reds fans will be split when it comes to who they want to keep hold of the most, but the bottom line is that all three signing new contracts would feel like one of the most significant moments in the club’s recent history.
