Liverpool are reportedly “sniffing around” Chelsea star Cole Palmer as the summer transfer window approaches with the Premier League set for major transformation.

The 2024/25 season has proven that there isn’t a single side totally happy with what they’ve got.

Manchester City have fallen really far from the title-winning performance last season while Arsenal struggled to challenge Liverpool this season.

Chelsea and Spurs, Manchester United are also in great need of new signings.

Even Liverpool – the champions elect – are rumoured to be planning major investment into their squad this season with major outgoing expected as well.

Trent Alexander-Arnold will be the first to go when his Liverpool contract expires on July 1st. The scouse fullback leaves without earning the Reds a transfer fee so replacing his creativity will be a tough task indeed.

How can Liverpool replace Alexander-Arnold’s impact?

First, it’s important to establish that there isn’t a fullback that Liverpool can buy that will replace his passing range, vision and technical class. Arne Slot will need to go with a more traditional right-back and find a way to introduce the missing creativity back into his lineup.

I’ve seen some suggest Xavi Simons would be a great addition and so too would someone like Florian Wirtz.

A name I wouldn’t have thought to mention is Cole Palmer, who has 14 goals and nine assists in the league this season. The Chelsea star was amazing for most of the season and while he has tailed off somewhat, he is a fantastic player.

Liverpool “sniffing around” Cole Palmer – would he be a good fit?

According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, Liverpool are “sniffing around” Cole Palmer although the Blues would likely demand an unrealistic fee to sell the 22-year-old.

Via Substack, Phillips reports: “Meanwhile, and I’m not saying we do sell him by the way, both Manchester City and Liverpool have been sniffing around Cole Palmer for the summer, with City making an enquiry recently.”

Reportedly, Steve Kay claims that it would cost around £85m to sign Palmer which would be better spent elsewhere.

Additionally, Palmer lacks the off-the-ball intensity to play in midfield for Liverpool and would be a luxury player.

With Mohamed Salah often stationed furthest forward, it could be destructive to have a player like Palmer in midfield unless Slot deviated from the style of play he has adopted so far.
