Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool attracted a lot of attention but in comparison to Marc Guehi’s summer, it has raised an important topic.

Alexander Isak forced his move to Liverpool and Yoane Wissa forced his move to Newcastle United.

Marc Guehi refused to act in any way to force Crystal Palace to get his move and ultimately, his wishes were disregarded when push comes to shove.

The difference in outcomes has raised a major debate online over whether or not football needs to change if only the players who are willing to act in potentially dishonourable ways to get a career move.

Guehi will now need to wait until January or until next summer to pursue his dream of joining a big club and challenging for titles.

Gary Lineker argues that it’s time for football to change its transfer system

Speaking on the Stick to Football Podcast, Gary Lineker shared what he thinks is a major problem right now.

“I think a large amount of the problem is the fact that footballers are bought and sold, I mean, you don’t get that really in any other walk of life do you,” Lineker said.

He continued: “They’re treated a little bit like cattle, human beings getting bought and sold is a very sort of strange thing, it’s almost unique to football, even other sports, it just works differently to that doesn’t it.

“It’s something that we’ve become used to for so many years now, but, in reality, footballers should be allowed to go wherever they want.

“If you work in banking or something and another bank comes in and you get headhunted, well, you go and work for them if you want to work for them because you might get a bigger salary or something like that.”

Given the money involved, it feels unlikely transfers would change much from what they are but this summer did feel like a turning point in the player power department.

If something like this were to change it would take a long time given how integral transfers are to the survival of every club.
