Alexis Mac Allister has made it very clear that he wants to sign a new contract with Liverpool, but it does not seem as though that is a priority for the Reds.
Liverpool spent £55m to sign Macca from Brighton in 2023, beating the likes of Manchester United to his signature, and the Argentine has been a fantastic performer since then.
The 2025/26 season was a low point for him, underperforming his normal standards quite considerably. However, so too did most of the squad, and Mac Allister returned to his high levels at the World Cup, starting the new season in the same vein.
Before the 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid, Mac Allister told reporters at a press conference that he wants to sign a new deal.
Mac Allister said: “There was a chance [to leave] of course, like everybody knows,” said the 27-year-old, clearly keen to speak about it openly.”

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very sad. I think everyone can see that I give my 100% for this football club, every single day in training. Of course I have good games and bad games, but I always give my best.
“I see Dominik [Szoboszlai] and Ryan [Gravenberch] renewing their contracts, which makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad that I didn’t get mine. Of course there is still time [to be offered a new contract]. Fans don’t need to worry because I will give 100% until my last day. We will see what happens. There was options to leave this summer. I think right now I’m in the right club.”
Now, reports from Spain suggest that Liverpool do not intend to renew Mac Allister’s contract, which will expire in 2028.
As such, Real Madrid are paying very close attention. Los Blancos have something of a parasitic relationship with Liverpool, poaching Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate in the last two summer transfer windows.
Mac Allister, however, will at least generate a transfer fee for the Reds if he leaves at the end of the season compared to the free transfers TAA and Konate sealed.
