Despite speculation linking Alexis Mac Allister with a future move to Real Madrid, the Liverpool midfielder looks set to stay at Anfield for the foreseeable future, according to comments made by his father, Carlos Mac Allister.
Mac Allister, who arrived from Brighton last summer in a deal worth £35 million, has quickly become a fan favourite at Liverpool.
His consistent form under both Jurgen Klopp and now Arne Slot has even attracted praise from Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, following a stunning goal against Fulham – his sixth of the season and 13th in a Liverpool shirt.
“Alexis is very happy where he is” – Carlos Mac Allister
In an interview with Argentinian media, Carlos Mac Allister firmly dismissed talk of an imminent departure for his son. While acknowledging Alexis’s admiration for La Liga, he made it clear that Liverpool is where the 25-year-old feels at home right now.
“For now, I don’t think so,” Carlos responded when asked about the possibility of a move. “Time will tell. Alexis is very happy where he is.”
He continued: “He lives in Manchester. On his block are [Andy] Robertson, [Joe] Gomez, and just four blocks away is [Argentina teammate] Licha Martinez from Manchester United.
“Alexis speaks English well, understands the rules of the game, and engages with people. I think moving to Liverpool has been the best thing that’s happened to him, which made the adaptation easier.”
Jurgen Klopp deserves praise for securing Mac Allister for Liverpool
Carlos also spoke about the early conversations with former manager Jurgen Klopp, who played a pivotal role in bringing the World Cup winner to Anfield.
Alexis’ father continued: “The first meeting was with me, to explain what [Klopp] saw in Alexis and why he wanted him. We had a great conversation. There’s a powerful anecdote there, but I’ve never shared it because it involves some strong language!”
Recalling a chat with Klopp following Liverpool’s Champions League loss to Real Madrid, Carlos said: “I told him the team needed more intensity – players had to get on top of their opponents, not defend from two metres away. He looked at me and said, ‘You’re right.’ That was the start of a great relationship.”
He also shared that Klopp personally called Alexis to express how excited he was to have him at the club.
