Liverpool are being linked with a move to sign Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon again despite the £100m it will cost.

I’ve written a number of articles already about why Gordon simply isn’t a good option for Liverpool.

Not only is the 24-year-old not anywhere near prolific as he should be, Newcastle reportedly want around £100m to sell him and he simply isn’t worth that kind of money.

However, it should not come as a surprise that the Scouser would be keen to join Liverpool.

The lastest reports on Gordon to Liverpool suggest the winger would jump at the opportunity to join the Reds despite playing 78 games for Everton before he moved to St. James’ Park.

Gordon is in the conversation to replace Luis Diaz this summer – along with Rodrygo

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Anthony Gordon is in the conversation to replace Luis Diaz should the Colombian move to Bayern Munich amid serious interest from the German side.

Bailey reports: “So there’s a few dominoes to fall here, but Anthony Gordon and Liverpool might be one that comes back on the agenda.

“If Diaz goes, I wouldn’t rule Gordon out. I think if Diaz — the left-sided player — goes, Liverpool will bring someone in.

“Obviously, we know they’ve talked to Rodrygo, but Gordon is very much in the conversation for them.

“We know he’s a player they’ve talked about signing before. We know his club is Liverpool after they emerged as an option when he left Everton. So Gordon is a very interesting one.”

Gordon isn’t an upgrade on Diaz in any way

I could be wrong but there is precious little that Anthony Gordon is better at than Luis Diaz. The only advantage to signing him would be that he is 24 and has already made nearly 200 Premier League appareances.

Even then, 35 goals and 31 assists in 184 appearances is decent but not the elite track record Liverpool should be looking for to replace a playaer as talented and effective as Diaz.

Last season, the former Porto star scored 17 goals and provided eight assists for Liverpool. For Newcastle, Gordon managed nine goals and seven assists.

There is every chance that Gordon is better than Diaz by the time he’s 28 in four years’ time, but is that worth paying £100m now? I certainly don’t think so.

Wirtz cost Liverpool £100m up front but he had 16 goals and 15 assists last season.

Ekitike is set to cost around £78m but he had 22 goals and 12 assists last season.

I would be happy to be proven wrong but Gordon is simply not a world class operator or close to that level yet.
