Arne Slot has guided Liverpool to the top of the Premier League table but he has done it almost altogether without Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo and Federico Chiesa although there is more to it than that as injuries have played a part.

Liverpool are leading the pack in the Premier League and have done so for most of the season with Arne Slot showing that he was an astute replacement for Jurgen Klopp. His style of play has been similar in ways to Klopp’s but Slot’s preference for control over controlled chaos means that he has placed his trust in 14 or 15players while the rest have been restricted to bit-part roles.

Wataru Endo was a cult figure under Klopp last season with the Japan international appearing for just 683 minutes this campaign with a total of just 99 minutes in the Premier League. Endo has been fully fit all season but the form and class of Ryan Gravenberch means it has been difficult for the former Stuttgart midfielder to feature in the league.

Harvey Elliott has also not been trusted in the Premier League. He has played even fewer minutes (75) but he has been injured. A broken foot ruled him out for 14 games but since he returned in November, Elliott has become something of a forgotten man, playing for just 502 minutes all season.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Carragher said it doesn’t seem as though Elliott, Endo or Chiesa have the trust of the manager.

“The Liverpool manager has tended to favour the same starters from a preferred pool of 14 or 15.

“He does not seem to trust back-up options such as Harvey Elliott or Wataru Endo unless there is no option.

“Last summer’s sole summer signing, Federico Chiesa, has contributed nothing. Again, his lack of minutes suggests Slot does not believe the Italian is a game-changer.”
