Arne Slot has lifted the lid on Liverpool’s preparations with Alexander Isak ahead of their meeting with Manchester United, explaining how the coaching staff have been working to improve the striker’s integration into the team during training sessions.
Isak has been one of Liverpool’s most high-profile arrivals, but his adaptation period has been closely managed due to fitness concerns and a disrupted pre-season following injury issues.
As a result, the club have taken a careful approach to building his match sharpness and tactical understanding.
Focus on chemistry and link-up play in training
Slot confirmed that a major focus in training has been ensuring Isak becomes more connected with Liverpool’s attacking structure, particularly in terms of timing, movement, and combination play with midfielders and wide forwards.
The Liverpool boss has previously highlighted that while Isak offers a major goal threat, his involvement in general play and touch count has sometimes been lower than expected, which has required extra work on the training ground.
Reports around the squad have suggested that sessions have been tailored to improve how quickly Liverpool can find Isak in advanced areas, while also refining his pressing triggers within Slot’s system.
Slot wants Isak more involved in attacking sequences
The key issue identified by the coaching staff has not been Isak’s finishing ability, but rather how often he is involved in sustained attacking moves.

“The good thing is that we have some training time now, so we are able to bring him into certain positions to make his teammates aware of which positions he prefers and where he would like to have the ball.
“It’s also very helpful for him to get fitter,” Slot added. “Because him having the ball more is not only about his teammates, it’s also about him making more runs, being more available, and not after an action needing a certain amount of time to make the next action again.”
Slot has indicated in previous discussions that Liverpool are aiming to get the striker more touches in dangerous areas, ensuring he is not isolated during matches, particularly against structured defensive sides.
That work has become even more important ahead of high-intensity fixtures such as Manchester United, where transitions and quick attacking combinations are expected to play a major role.
Gradual integration after injury setbacks
Isak’s Liverpool career has so far been shaped by a stop-start rhythm, with injuries and fitness management limiting his ability to build consistent momentum in the side.
The club have been cautious not to overload him too quickly, instead opting for a phased approach that allows him to build rhythm gradually while avoiding setbacks.
Slot has repeatedly stressed that patience is required with players returning from disrupted preparation periods, and Isak has been treated in line with that philosophy.
