Liverpool have passed the first test of their Premier League title defence with a hard-fought win over Arsenal but there are finishing touches to put on last-minute transfers.

The first international break of the 2025/26 campaign is upon us and after three straight wins, Arne Slot and his players already have a lead to protect at the league summit.

Liverpool are top with nine points, Chelsea are second with seven and the Gunners are joint-third with six points. The Reds now have two weeks with their nations before returning to face Burnley in the Premier League and a big test in Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Arne Slot says “I will probably hear tonight” about transfer news on Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi

Arne Slot spoke to the media after Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Arsenal and had exciting news for the reporters.

When probed about how the Merseyside club plans to end a transfer window that brought Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike to Anfield, Slot replied: “I will hear probably tonight if anything will happen.”

Daily Mail journalist Lewis Steele reports: “Less than 24 hours to go but a bid is still expected for Alexander Isak (and let’s wait and see on Marc Guehi and outgoings, too)…”

Isak and Guehi would cap the best start to a Premier League season in a long time

While it will require Liverpool to spend another £160m, signing Isak and Guehi on Deadline Day would mark the most dominant start to a new season in Anfield History.

The Reds have never spent so much on new signings, nor made so many profitable sales and have a lead at the top of the Premier League after just three games.

It’s by no means a guarantee that Liverpool will lift the title – with many defensive and midfield questions to ask – but Slot could be grinning from ear to ear in two weeks for his pre-Burnley press conference.

Adding Isak’s goals to an already blistering attack and Guehi’s consistency and proven quality to a defence with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate in it would make Liverpool one of the most exciting teams to watch in a very long time.
