Arsenal are reportedly plotting a shock move to sign Liverpool goal machine Diogo Jota in the summer transfer window as the Gunners’ search for a lethal no.9 continues.
Despite two injuries that, combined, have ruled Jota out for a total of 14 games this season, the Portuguese forward has still managed to score eight goals and assist two.
The former Wolves star is vital to Liverpool and key to the Premier League title race.
This is apparently something Arsenal agree on with a report now suggesting the Gunners are keen on taking him to the Emirates Stadium in the summer transfer window.
After signing Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz in recent years, Mikel Arteta seems unsatisfied with his attacking options beyond the mercurial Bukayo Saka, who has been injured since December.
Report claims Arsenal have placed Diogo Jota on striker shortlist
Diogo Jota is “one of the names” on Arsenal’s shortlist of strikers they could target in the summer transfer market, according to a new report from Football Insider.
Former Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers head scout Mike Brown says that Arsenal believe that the lack a lethal attacker is holding the Gunners back.
“Jota is one of the names on Arsenal’s list,” Brown said.
“He’s got a very impressive goalscoring record at Liverpool and he does play as a sort of hybrid forward for them, he’s not an out-and-out striker.
“Arsenal want somebody who can play on the wing as well as through the middle, and he fits that mould.
“But he still scores goals and he’s very effective.
“He would give Mikel Arteta’s side something they haven’t got at the moment.
“A player who is going to guarantee them goals and a threat in behind, but is also capable of getting the ball into feet and linking up with his teammates.
“His injury record is a bit of a concern, but I don’t think that will put them off.
“So I think he is one they’ll be targeting in the summer.
“Then, it will depend on whether Liverpool want to sell to a rival and what type of fee they’re looking for.
“It could end up being a big-money move if they’re going to let him leave.”
Too much change for Liverpool in the summer could be dangerous
Liverpool are Premier League table toppers but even if they win the title this season, there is a lot of turbulence at the club with contract renewals not going the way fans hoped.
Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold could leave while Caoimhin Kelleher is all but nailed on to make his exit.
If Jota leaves as well, Slot will suddenly find his squad laid bare.
