Alan Smith

Another gem from the Leeds United academy, Smith was a local hero at Elland Road – scoring over 40 goals and bursting into the England side. After relegation from the Premier League with Leeds, Smith moved to rivals Manchester United for £7 million in 2004 where he failed to nail down a regular first team spot. When given his chance Smith did impress the United fans but in February 2006 came the moment that changed his career when he blocked a John Arne Riise free kick away at Liverpool. Smith broke his leg and dislocated his ankle, an injury that Sir Alex Ferguson said was the worst he has ever seen. After a long comeback from that injury, Smith moved to Newcastle where he once again failed to secure a first team spot.
