In goal; of course; we have Chris Kirkland, the man that was the answer to England’s goalkeeping problems when he broke into the Coventry first team in 1998. After impressing, Kirkland got a £6 million move to Liverpool in 2001 and it was thought that he would go on to be one of the best ‘keepers the country had. However, recurring injuries to his back and shoulders only enabled him to play 25 league games in five years at Anfield which resulted in him moving out on loan to different clubs. When he formerly signed for Wigan in 2006, Kirkland assured them that his injury hell was behind him. Having had a successful spell for the Latics, the Leicestershire-born stopper suffered a serious back injury that looked to have ended his career. Kirkland is yet to fully recover from that injury and has had unsuccessful loan spells once again to boost his fitness but is unfortunately back on the treatment table.
