Liverpool will “try” to complete the signing of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi in January, according to former scout Mick Brown.
The Reds are in an appalling run of form, with Saturday’s dismal 3-2 defeat away to Brentford cranking up the pressure on Arne Slot.
There are so many problems for Liverpool, from new signings struggling to the form of Mohamed Salah, and they are leaking goals at an alarming rate.
Failing to sign Guehi on deadline day was a blow, having agreed a £35m move for him, but speaking to Football Insider, Brown said he could see it happening in January:
“Liverpool don’t look as defensively stable as they were last year. Van Dijk has been out of form, and they’re still not completely sure about Konate’s future. There’s obviously been a hell of a lot of talk about Marc Guehi, they missed out in the summer and now there’s all sorts of clubs having a look at him.
“At first, it seemed like a certainty that he would go to Liverpool in January, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment because he’s got these other options. It’s no surprise that the likes of Real Madrid are in for him now, he’s England’s starting centre-back and he’s going to be available for free.
“But I’ve always felt Liverpool could try to get it done in January even if it isn’t a certainty any more. He is by far the best option out there at the moment, and he’ll be available for £35million or less, which is a bargain fee for a defender of that quality. When you consider the difficulties they’ve had in defense lately, I expect they’ll be even more determined to get that deal done as soon as possible.”
Guehi still the standout defensive option for Liverpool
When Liverpool failed to snap up Guehi, there was a niggling feeling that it could prove to be a key moment, and not having him in their squad has been a major miss.
Virgil van Dijk has been largely good, but even he has dipped of late, while Ibrahima Konate’s performances have left a lot to be desired at times.
If Guehi is suddenly available in January, Liverpool must be reading to pounce, with England teammate Ezri Konsa describing him as a “brilliant” player.
It remains to be seen if Palace are willing to cash in on him midway through the season, though, with European commitments meaning they may be happier to lose him on a free transfer next summer.
